Big Ben Model Kit

4D modelshop & N Scale Architects (USA) have produced a precision laser cut wooden model of the Big Ben Tower which can be used as a money box.

The kit has been designed to comply with Key Stage 2 D&T projects of the National Curriculum.

The Big Ben kit can be purchased here for £9.99 (formally £23.95!!)

Target Age: 7+ (National Curriculum Key Stage Two)

Compatible with Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum
· Creative!
· Develop new skills!
· Fun!

Learn about one of London's most famous structures by building your own model of Big Ben's clock tower.

Extracts from KS2 NC for Design and Technology:
Children should be taught to:
· Assemble, join and combine components/materials accurately.
· Use finishing techniques to strengthen and improve the appearance of their products.
· Understand that the working characteristics of materials affect the ways they can be used.

Other skills and techniques:
· Electrical circuits, including simple switches can be used to achieve results that work (relevant to the working mechanism of the clock which might be inserted into the Big Ben model).

Adding a 'design' element into the kit will enable it to be more creative and will also help to fulfil a more rounded aspect of 'Design and Technology' at KS2:

The 'colouring'/decorating option for the kit will do this.

The kit consists of:

5 x 145mm x 210mm laser cut wooden sheet
6 x 135mm x 210mm colour sticker sheets
Fast tack glue
Silicone carbide medium grade sanding pad
Masking tape
A pencil

The kit is put together in six stages:

A step by step guide to building your own Big Ben

Step 1: To begin construction of the Clock Tower and Base locate A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 & B6 on the laser-cut wood sheets.
Remove these pieces from the wood sheets by cutting the thin connectors with your modelling knife as shown (left).

Then remove any remaining connector material ('nubs') from these pieces with your sand paper.

Step 2: Glue the tabs along one edge of B6 into the slots on the upper part of B1 as shown (left).

Now glue B2 to B1 & B6 as shown (left) and then glue B5 to the bottom edge of B1 & B2 as shown (right).

To strengthen this structure, apply a bead of glue along the inside corners as shown (left).

Next glue B3 to B2, B5 & B6 as shown (right).

Finally, glue B4 on to B1, B3, B5 & B6 and use small strips of masking tape (approximately 10-15mm in length) to hold this and the other pieces in place until dry as shown (left).

Once dry, remove the tape and glue A1, A2, A3 & A4 to each other and into the slots on B5 as shown in (left & right).

Step 3: To begin construction of the Middle Tower, Middle Tower Roof, and Facade locate C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, C10, C11, E1, E2, E3 & E4 on the laser-cut wood sheets.

Remove these pieces from the wooden sheets as we did in STEP 1.

Glue the tabs along one edge of C10 into the slots on the upper part of C1 and glue C2 to C1 & C10 as shown left.

Then glue C9 to the bottom edge of C1 & C2 and add C3 as shown (left).

Glue C4 on to C1, C3, C9 & C10 using small strips of masking tape as we did in STEP 2.

Next glue C5, C6, C7 & C8 to each other and into the slots on C10 as shown (right).

Then add C11 to the top of these pieces as shown (left).

Again use small strips of masking tape to hold these pieces together until dry.

Once dry, remove the tape and glue E1, E2, E3 & E4 to each other and into the notches on C11 as shown (right).

Step 4: To begin construction of the Upper Tower and Upper Tower Roof, locate D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9 & D10 on the laser-cut wood sheets. Remove these pieces from these sheets as we did in STEP 1.

Glue the tabs along one edge of D6 into the slots on the upper part of D1 and glue D2 to D1 & D6 as shown (left).

Next glue D5 to the bottom edge of D1 & D2 and add D3 & D4 using small strips of masking tape as we did in STEP 2.

Next glue D7, D8, D9 & D10 to each other and into the slots on D6 as shown (left).

Again use small strips of masking tape to hold these pieces together until dry.

Step 5: Before applying the stickers, be sure to wash and dry your hands to avoid smudges.

Also be sure to remove any remaining pieces of masking tape and sand smooth any rough surfaces or visible dried glue.

The stickers are removed from their sheets by using your hobby knife or scissors to cut the small connectors as shown (below).

These stickers have been labelled with the letter and number of the wood piece on which they will be applied.

Once removed, their paper backing is separated by folding the stickers at the seams in the paper backing or from the edge of the sticker as shown (left & right).
To apply, align each sticker with the left & top edges of the corresponding wood piece and then smooth it down and to the right with your fingers as shown.
Step 6: The three completed sections of the Big Ben model are shown (left).

Next we will glue the Upper Tower on the top of the Middle Tower as shown (left).

If you wish to use this model as money bank, do not glue the Middle Tower to the Clock Tower. Coins can be inserted in the slot in Middle Tower Roof (C7) and removed by lifting the Middle Tower as shown (right).

Hints on Assembly:

1. The tabs, slots, and notches cut into the wood pieces are intended to make construction quicker and more accurate. They allow for easier alignment of these pieces during construction and provide better stability by interlocking the pieces.

2. Each wood piece and sticker in this kit has been labelled with a letter and number combination. The stickers have the same letter and number combination as their corresponding wood pieces. The letter references a particular section of the model whilst the number identifies the individual wall or roof piece within that section as shown in Diagram 1.

3. Apply glue on the inside of the model whenever possible and be sure to wipe off any excess glue immediately.

4. Use small strips of masking tape to hold pieces in place whilst the glue dries.

5. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after working with the wood pieces and before applying the stickers.

6. To make the stickers water resistant, lightly spray them with a clear aerosol lacquer or fixative once the model is completed.
